The Kirkwood Baseball team took on Ellsworth Community College while the Softball team took on Iowa Lakes Community College on Sunday the 19th. Both the softball and Baseball teams played two games with the first ones taking place at 1:00PM at Kirkwood’s Baseball and Softball fields. The men won their first game 16-6, and their second game 11-0. The women won their games 14-3, and 11-2. They were originally supposed to play these games on Friday and Saturday however due to the weather on Friday all four games were pushed back until Sunday in order to give the give the field time to dry out.

Bloomsbury Farm hosted it’s fifth annual Bunny Bash on Saturday March 28th and Sunday March 29th and Friday April 3rd to Sunday April 5th. This event kicked off the 2026 season at Bloomsbury Farm which also hosts the Iowa Tulip Festival, Fields of Flight Kite Festival, Iowa Flower Festival, Iowa Fall Festival (which includes Scream Acres), and the Baby Animal Festival which they will be bringing back for the first time in several years. The Baby Animal Festival will feature Chicks (baby chickens), baby bunnies, baby ducklings, a calf (baby cow), kids (baby goats), lambs (baby sheep), a foal (baby donkey), and possibly more.

The Wolf Den Flea Market was held at the old Yonkers store in Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids on Saturday March 28th 9:00AM-6:00PM and Sunday March 29th 10:00AM-4:00PM. This event is hosted by Wolf Den Close Outs and Wolf Den Market Place owner Jason Miller. Miller has been hosting markets for the last six years, and the Wolf Den Flea Market at the Lindale Mall for the last five years. The event featured over 100 vendors selling everything from toy cars to records, and various arts and crafts.

Life Church in Cedar Rapids is currently adding an auditorium, lobby, and offices to make the space that they have more functional. Phase one of the addition ended in June, and phase two is scheduled to be finished in April.

CSPS (Czech and Slovak Prudential Society) Hall hosted the Art Soul and Blues Brunch and Silent Auction on Saturday March 7th from 9:30AM-12:00PM. The event was CSPS’s first signature fundraiser. It featured an art auction with works of art by local artists, a brunch prepared by Julia’s Kitchen, and musical performances by Jefferson Highschool’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Iowa City based Blues musician Kevin Burt.

CSPS began in 1988 as an independent performance art company helmed by Mel Adringa and F John Herbert. Adringa and Herbert rented CSPS Hall from Service Press & Litho Company owner Robert G. Prucha for $550.00 per month until the flood of 2008 after which they bought the building and spent 6 million dollars renovating it. Over the last thirty years CSPS Hall has hosted over 3,000 concerts and 500 art exhibits.

Burt is a self taught musician that now performs anywhere between three hundred and twenty five and four hundred shows per year.

Kevin Burt performs an original song about being a father and watching his kids grow up. Burt will be making the trip to San Francisco to perform at Biscuits & Blues on March 13th and 14th next before coming back to Cedar Rapids to perform during the Never Miss a Sunday Show at the Old Neighborhood Pub on March 29th.

Camp Tanager celebrated it’s 100th anniversary with their Grill and Groove for Good fundraiser at Camp Tanager on Saturday February 28th from 5:30PM-9:00PM. Tanager offers programs that address disruptive actions, behaviors, and emotions in children. They also teach important life skills, prepare children and teens to make positive decisions in the future, and give parents the information needed to understand how mental health affects their child’s development and well being. Camp Tanager hosts overnight camps, day camps, medically specialized camps and more in order to provide kids a place to go when they are in need. The Grill and Groove for Good fundraiser boasted a cash bar, silent auction, and party games for guests to participate in. All proceeds from the event will go to Tanager’s prevention programs which include Expressive Arts, Freedom Schools, and the LGBTQ+ Youth Center.

Dillon Rairdin plays the keyboard during his set with the band, Vibe. The musicians played several sets throughout the night. Music included jazz, classic R&B, Motown and Soul music. The group has been playing together on and off for a decade.

Emcee Ryan Shenefelt addresses the crowd. Shenefelt has volunteered for Tanager Place’s annual fundraisers for four years in a row. “I love bringing everyone together and raising money,” Shenefelt said.

Okpara Rice, CEO of Tanager Place, speaks to the crowd about what Tanager means to those it impacts. He told his story of life as a social worker and those who helped him get where he is today. Rice finished his speech with the sentiment that Tanager doesn’t solve people’s problems, but walks alongside them on their journeys.

Quinn Pettifer makes the final speech of the night. She reminded the community of the positive impact that Tanager has, and announced that they had gotten their $5,000 fundraising match.

The Coe College men’s and women’s basketball team took on Simpson College at 2:00 P.M. and 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 21^st. The Lady Kohawks played first and lost 58-68. The men’s team won 76-71. The games took place at Kohawk Arena in Cedar Rapids. Regardless of the loss, both teams celebrated Senior Night with the players’ parents in attendance. Both teams will play in the A-R-C tournament this coming week. The men will play on Tuesday, February 24^th, at 7:00 P.M. The women will play at 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 24^th. Both games will take place in the Kohawk Arena.

The eighth annual Cedar Rapids Quad Con comic and toy show took place at the DoubleTree hotel in downtown Cedar Rapids on Saturday February 14th from 10AM-5PM. The event featured authors, artists, speakers, a cosplay contest, and a One Piece card game tournament. Quad Con is a family friendly event that costs just $10.00 for people over the age of 12 to attend with kids age 12 and under able to get into the event for free. The Quad Con organization holds 38-40 events per year in various cities around the mid-west. Quad Con is an event that celebrates people that enjoy comic books, sci fi, toys, video games, costumes, and other nerdy hobbies.

Author Ben Wolf speaks with potential customers about some of his books. Wolf has been writing professionally for the last sixteen years, and has published 29 books. Wolf’s first published book is called Blood for Blood and is a historical fiction about vampires. His most recent published book is called Rickshaw Riot and it is about a video game mogul that becomes trapped in his own game.

Justin Shaw purchases some comic books from Cool Stuff owner Kim Wells while dressed as Super Man. Cool Stuff is based in the Quad Cities, and has been in business for 35 years. Cool Stuff will be in Peoria Illinois on February 21st and 22nd next.

Akiiaris Atelier owner Kristi Lee adjusts her acrylic standees that she had for sale at her stand in the DoubleTree hotel on Saturday February 14th. Lee Made the design for the acrylic standees, and works full time as a pharmacist.

Matt Rybarczyk speaks with potential customers about some of the comics that he has for sale while participating in the Quad Con comic and toy show as a vendor Saturday February 14th. Rybarczyk has been collecting comics for the last 45 years, and selling them at shows for 35 years.

Andrew McFarlin takes a look at some of the pen and ink on wood artworks from Gayne Allen Darrow Jr. while attending his second Quad Con dressed as his favorite Marvel Comics Character Gambit. Darrow Jr. has been making art since he was a kid, has self published five different comic books, and also worked as a story board artist for several different independent movies. He is also the nephew of celebrated comic artist Geof Darrow.

The Kirkwood Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams took on the Northeast Community College Hawks at 1:00PM and 3:00PM at Johnson Hall on Saturday February 14th. The women played first, defeating the lady hawks 70-39. Afterwards the Kirkwood men were defeated 67-85. This was the second to last home game of the season for the Kirkwood men’s and women’s basketball teams. Both teams will be traveling to Iowa Falls to take on Ellsworth Community College on Wednesday with the final home games against Des Moines Area Community College taking place at 1:00PM and 3:00PM on Saturday February 21st.

A couple of Earrings are displayed for sale by Lil Buggies owner Ann Marie McNamara. McNamara, who has been in business since 2023, makes the Earrings using Polymer Clay.

Sabrina Tyler and her Niece June Tyler (both from Cedar Rapids) look at some of the jewelry available for sale by Art 101. Art 101 is based in Knoxville Iowa, and is owned by Frank Mathias who has been in business for the last 15 years. Mathias made the switch from selling clay sculptures to selling 3D printed sculptures six years ago.

Cake and Bake owner Jennifer Rud takes a look at some of the books available for sale at the Embodying Elysium section. Embodying Elysium is based in Marion.

Author and Ciba Award Finalist Rebecca M Krogman has books from her Keepers of The Midgate series on display at the winter market at Hawkeye Downs on Sunday February 1st. Krogman has been writing for the last five years, and works as a freshwater fisheries biologist full-time.

Diane Jensen looks to purchase a bottle of wine from Brickyard Wines while attending the winter market at Hawkeye Downs on Sunday February 1st. Brickyard Wines is owned by Chuck and Marsha Brainard (who started the business four years ago), and is based in Clermont Iowa.

Co-Owner of Tubby Tactical Anne Middleton takes inventory at the end of the Made in Iowa Winter Market on Sunday February 1st. Middleton who owns the business (which is based in Leroy Minnesota) with her husband Jim Middleton sold over 25% of their inventory during the Market on Saturday January 31st and February 1st.

This is not my my typical post, and I don’t typically do this kind of thing. However I would like to let all of you know that I am currently teaching a beginner photography class once a month at Kirkwood Community College. The Marion Heritage Center hosted Triumphs and Tragedies America and Iowa in Space on Saturday January 24th from 11AM to 1:30PM. The event featured a presentation by historian David Wendell as well as an exhibit that featured models of various space crafts, photos from the missions, and a flag that was taken to space on one of the missions.

A group of attendees look at some of the pictures from different missions to space available for viewing at the Marion Heritage Center. The exhibit will remain open until May.

Historian David Wendell speaks to a couple of attendees about some of the items on display at the Marion Heritage Center. Wendell developed an interest in the history of space travel in JR High when his father would bring retired equipment home from Collins Aerospace.

David Wendell tells the crowd about the crew of STX 26 which featured two Iowans (David Hilmers from DeWitt, and Pinkey Nelson born in Charles City), and was the first space flight after the challenger exploded during take-off.

Marion History Center co-founder Victor Klopfenstein watches the presentation by historian David Wendell. Klopfenstein and his wife bought the building that the heritage center is located in in the late nineties before, with funding from the McCloud family, they turned the building into the Marion Heritage Center. He later sold the building to the Marion Heritage Foundation.

David Wendell uses a model of Discovery to show the crowd what happened to the shuttle Columbia upon it’s reentry into Earth’s atmosphere in 2003. The heat absorbing tiles on the shuttle broke apart due to the friction caused by reentering earth’s atmosphere. Dr Laurel Clark who was born in Ames Iowa was among the crew of the doomed mission in which none of the crew survived reentry. Clark was later awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor posthumously.

Sam Dillon from Hiawatha looks at a flag that was taken into space on one of the missions.

David Wendell rings a triangle in remembrance of the astronauts lost during the various missions into space before a moment of silence. Wendell has been hosting this type of event since he was in Highschool, and will also be helping with the Civil War Reenactment in Marion this summer.

St. Pius X hosted it’s annual Epiphany Concert on Sunday January 4th at 3:00PM. The event featured catholic church choirs and musicians from all over the Cedar Rapids area performed during the concert. The event was free for the public however the church did accept donations which will go to the Metro Public Outreach program. The concert was started by Sandra Pickart about 20 years ago

The Cedar Rapids History Center hosted it’s 8th annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday November 22nd from 10:00AM-2:00PM. The event featured nine different vendors from the Cedar Rapids area all selling Christmas related items. Proceeds from the event go to the History center. The History center also features events such as Blues and Brews, Did you Know and Doughnuts, an Escape Room, Family Fun Day, Several Guests Speakers, Spooky Legends, a Root Beer Festival, and Several Walking Tours.

CSPS (Czech and Slovak Prudential Society) Hall hosted the Henhouse Prowlers on Saturday November 22nd at 7:00PM. The Henhouse Prowlers are a Chicago based quartet that has toured in 31 different countries on five of the seven continents. The band members agreed that the show in downtown Cedar Rapids had been their best in Iowa, and stated that they look forward to returning. The band got started when several of it’s members started playing at a dive bar in North Chicago in 2004.

Guitar Player Chris Dollar joined the band in 2017, and is the newest member of the Henhouse Prowlers. Dollar has been playing guitar for the last twenty years.
